What do I love about: Catherine the Great?
If you know me well, then it is not a surprise that biographies are my favorite genre. This book was chosen by my book club and boy did it exceed my expectation. Prior to now, I had never heard about Catherine II or Catherine the great as she was later referred to. One of the reasons I read a lot is the opportunity to broaden my knowledge base and that is exactly what this book offered. I learnt firsthand about the early European Monarchy, Russian Tsars, Serfdom, Enlightenment, French Revolution, The arts, Pandemics such as small box all in the context of the 18th century.
The writer does a fantastic job adding color to every character. She narrates the story of the Protagonist Catherine who was a German married off by Elizabeth II to her nephew Peter II-The Russian heir. Catherine quickly adopted the Russian language, religion and culture which later made her popular and ultimately earned her the throne.
This book has its equivalent show on both HBO and Amazon prime, but I absolutely enjoyed the book better that the show. Apologies to my readers for not extracting any notes. I was caught up in the book that I refused to stop and take notes ☹.
